Fernando Pessoa: Social and Poetic Illuminations

<jats:p>This book deals with the life and social views of the great Portugese poet and political writer Fernando Nogueira Pessoa (1888–1935). Besides his remarkable poetic capabilities, amoung his countrymen Pessoa has become famous because of his special way of thought and the unprecedented originaqlity, deserving from them a characteristic nickname: “The Alien”. Living in Portugal during the crucial periods of its history — the transition from the monarchy to republic and the Salazar dictatorship, while the whole world living between the two World Wars, Pessoa made series of important observations on human and social nature, some of which seem to be quite actual today.</jats:p>
