Abstract

During the recording of the inheritance book (tereke) of Hacı Halil Efendi, (one of the Shaykh al-Islams of the reign of Mahmud II, who resided in exile in Afyonkarahisar), it was observed that he possessed a substantial collection of furs, robes, overcoats, and shawls which he wore on official and ceremonial occasions. Among the clothes documented in Hacı Halil Efendi’s inheritance, there were 14 furs made from the hides of various furred animals, such as sable, stoat and fox, each adorned with shawls of different colours and styles; 10 robes specifically tailored for the ilmiye class, made only from chukka shawl and patista, without the use of fur; and many overcoats made of chukka shawl and patista. Hacı Halil Efendi’s under garments, socks, and shoes worn under furs, overcoats and robes were also recorded as a part of the inheritance. Within the scope of this study, the clothes, and their characteristics that a Shaykh al-Islam wore on official and ceremonial occasions, as well as in his everyday life will be evaluated on the basis of the clothes identified in the probate inventory of Şeyhülislam Hacı Halil Efendi in Afyonkarahisar after he passed away and recorded in his tereke. This will contribute to the identification and understanding of material cultural assets through the clothes of a Shaykh al-Islam which were considered indicators of status and wealth during the period
