Abstract
Scope
This document provides best practices for carbon steel horizontal directional drilling (HDD) Design, Construction, and Management. This includes effects on HDD coatings, coupons, HDD mud testing, pipe storage, and preservation, best practices of the HDD/Bore, AC/DC issues, cathodic protection (CP), the temperature of the product, follow-up testing, common issues, and the effectiveness and efficiency of the HDD programs. This applies to both new installations and managing existing HDDs and will reference other related standards and design practices. This standard is recommended for all HDDs using carbon steel and other pipe materials for design, construction, and operation.
Rationale
Due to the absence of a single source/guide for HDDs, a comprehensive document of best practices was needed to consolidate various approaches for HDD design, construction, and management. This could lead to better mitigations for a higher risk of metal loss after installation, i.e., external corrosion, coating damage, function of cathodic protection (CP), etc.
