Abstract
<jats:p>Рассматриваются вопросы о времени и причинах присвоения первому российскому царю прозвища «Грозный», его семантика. Показано, что прозвище это имело достаточно сложное происхождение и целый ряд значений. К Ивану IV оно стало применяться уже после его смерти в качестве положительного атрибута правителя. Со второй половины XVII в. под влиянием иностранной литературы о российском царе эпитет «Грозный» постепенно превращается в уничижительный, окончательно став таковым во второй половине следующего столетия. Важную роль в этой трансформации и закреплении в отечественной традиции за Иваном IV прозвища «Грозный» сыграли историки поколения М. В. Ломоносова, но самую большую роль — Н. М. Карамзин. Благодаря художественному слову последнего прозвище «Грозный» окончательно закрепилось за Иваном IV, стало неотделимым от его имени.</jats:p> <jats:p>Issues of time and reasons for the assignment of the nickname “Terrible” to the first Russian tzar, and semantics of this nickname are considered. It is shown that this nickname had a rather complex origin and a number of meanings. It was not until his death that this nickname started to be used as a positive attribute of Ivan IV. From the second half of the 17th century, under the influence of foreign literature about the Russian tzar, the epithet “Terrible” gradually transformed into a pejorative word, establishing itself as pejorative in the second half of the next century. An important role in this transformation and in the assigning of the nickname “Terrible” to Ivan IV in the domestic tradition was played by M. V. Lomonosov and especially N. M. Karamzin. Thanks to the artistic verbal talent of the latter, the nickname “Terrible” was finally assigned to Ivan IV and became inseparable from his name.</jats:p>
