Abstract
The Banovina Committee of the Serbian Red Cross in Niš, operating in close cooperation with municipal authorities and other Red Cross committees, worked diligently to alleviate the consequences of wartime hardships affecting the civilian population. Its activities encompassed a wide range of initiatives aimed at providing assistance to prisoners of war and the most vulnerable segments of society. The Committee was actively engaged in dispatching relief parcels to prisoners of war and played a significant role in the receipt and forwarding of prisoners’ correspondence, thereby enabling communication between detainees and their families. It also provided essential information to families searching for missing relatives. In addition, the Committee supplied medical materials and equipment for patient care, as well as food provisions for hospitals. Administrative duties were regularly performed to ensure the smooth functioning of all activities. Particular attention was devoted to collecting data on impoverished families in order to identify those most in need of assistance. Thanks to monetary and food donations collected with great dedication, the Committee was able to provide direct support to prisoners of war, secure food for children, and assist the poor. The work of the Banovina Committee of the Serbian Red Cross in Niš clearly demonstrates the crucial role of humanitarian organizations in times of crisis, as they provide essential aid and support to those most in need
