Abstract

This chapter discusses ethical challenges and barriers unique to graduate-level qualitative information technology (IT) research faced by computer science, systems, and management researchers. IT research presents several challenges stemming from a discrepancy between the researcher's approach to ethical research design and the characteristics of qualitative methodology, bias, and discrimination. The review of the ethical considerations considers current implementations and recommendations in safeguards and risk mitigation strategies to protect research participants' rights, privacy, and well-being. The chapter explores ethical reflections in research design, the regulatory landscape governing IT research, and current studies addressing the general approach to applied ethics, focusing on education and knowledge of compliance requirements and the consequences of non-compliance in human subject research (HSR). Ultimately, this chapter underscores the need for researchers to prioritize ethical considerations throughout the IT research lifecycle, fostering ethical research practices.
