Abstract
This chapter explores the role of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in strengthening project initiation and planning, two phases that critically shape overall project success. Traditional approaches are often constrained by static tools, expert-based judgement, and limited capacity to manage uncertainty, complexity, and dynamic stakeholder environments. Recent advances in AI introduce data-driven and adaptive solutions to these challenges. The chapter examines AI applications in four key areas: stakeholder analysis and engagement, predictive risk assessment, automated project scheduling, and intelligent resource forecasting and allocation. Methods such as machine learning, natural language processing, optimisation algorithms, and predictive analytics support early risk detection, dynamic planning, and evidence-based decision-making. While the benefits of AI integration are significant, the chapter also recognises challenges related to data quality, ethics, transparency, and organisational readiness, emphasising the importance of human–AI collaboration for resilient project foundations.
