Abstract
This chapter discusses the girlchild puberty rites of passage as practised by the VaRemba in southern Africa. VaRemba are a very secretive people and thus, very little have been written about them. The little that is written is based on secondary sources, either colonial or speculative narratives and projections from other southern African communities' practices. Although these sources may hint on some of the things happening during the VaRemba cultural events, they are devoid of the ‘exact touch', meaning and processes as practised by VaRemba. The chapter is qualitative based on key informant interviews and observational methods. The chapter establishes that some aspects of the Komba curriculum like labia minora stretching have been adapted from the Khoisan communities, but they are not universal aspects of Komba among all VaRemba. The chapter establishes that Komba is a very secretive package that prepares a woman for adulthood and marital life. The VaRemba Komba is a hybrid outcome of Judaic (Mikvah and Bat Mitzvah), Karanga/Shona, and Khoisan traditions in southern Africa.
