Abstract
Large language models (LLMs) have recently emerged as a significant development effort in artificial intelligence (AI), particularly in generative AI, built on top of deep learning models. In addition to their common use in popular AI chatbots like ChatGPT, Claude, and Grok, LLMs have also been used in specific domains such as law, finance, and healthcare. In healthcare, various studies report development and applications of medical LLMs, due to the significance of their use in the medical domain affecting the lives and well-being of individuals and communities. In this chapter, we consider medical LLMs from the perspective of multilinguality, and provide a survey of multilingual medical LLMs. After an overview of medical LLMs, we cover multilingual medical LLMs proposed in the related literature. We suggest future research lines based on the findings of the covered papers. We hope that this survey chapter will stand as a significant contribution to the related literature, and both researchers and practitioners of medical LLMs benefit from the presented findings.
