Abstract
This chapter examines the growing role of Agentic Artificial Intelligence (AI) in transforming Business Process Management (BPM) within contemporary organizations. Unlike traditional AI systems designed mainly for task automation, agentic AI introduces autonomous, goal-oriented agents capable of reasoning, planning, and coordinating complex organizational workflows. The chapter analyzes how these systems contribute to cognitive management by augmenting decision-making processes and enhancing organizational adaptability. Drawing on theoretical perspectives such as dynamic capabilities, absorptive capacity, and distributed cognition, it proposes a conceptual framework explaining how agentic AI supports different stages of the BPM lifecycle, including process design, execution, monitoring, and optimization. The chapter also discusses emerging governance challenges related to transparency, accountability, and human oversight. Overall, it highlights the shift from AI as an operational assistant toward AI as a cognitive partner in organizational management.
