In Charmed Life, Cat Chant’s journey of self-discovery explores identity and agency as he confronts manipulation and realises his potential. The Magicians of Caprona presents Tonino Montana’s growth amidst family conflict, emphasising collaboration and moral responsibility. Drawing on the model of the hero’s and the heroine’s journey, this article adopts magic, agency, and identity as its central analytical lenses to compare how each protagonist negotiates personal growth. Jones interweaves the fantastical with the emotional and ethical dilemmas of youth, using alternate realities to reflect the trials of growing up. This article underscores her innovative approach to children’s fantasy, revealing its capacity to address complex themes through imaginative storytelling.
