Abstract

During wartime, crisis management and flexible adaptive management become important to maintain the continuity of enterprise operations. The purpose of the article was to study the practice of crisis management of businesses during the period of military operations in Ukraine. Crisis management is an approach to management in organizations in conditions of shock events, and economic shocks, political or military challenges. The article examines the impact of a specific type of crisis – wartime – on enterprise management in Ukraine during 2022–2025. The study identifies the primary characteristics of a wartime crisis: unpredictability of duration, high operational risk, and a high degree of volatility. Key models of business crisis management under the conditions of the invasion in Ukraine are defined, and their practical application is analyzed through the examples of enterprises of systemic importance to the national economy. The core crisis management models identified include process-based, strategic, and adaptive models, each differing in response strategies. The experience of systemically important Ukrainian enterprises in applying anti-crisis management approaches and methods demonstrates the combination of different models in strategic management to respond to new challenges. The process-based model is grounded in integrating anti-crisis measures into strategic management and operational planning to support business continuity and recovery. The strategic model involves a strategic approach within planning and forecasting based on action plans and growth strategies that account for business risks and threats. The adaptive model of crisis management has become the most widespread in Ukrainian practice, based on business continuity management and the concepts of resilience, flexibility, and agility. As a result of studying Ukrainian crisis management practices during the war, the research highlights the importance of investing in equipment modernization for production continuity, adopting new technologies, assets relocation, and international expansion. Further research should be directed to the study of the main methods of crisis management.
