Abstract

Typology of Karelian, Vepsian and Finnish Dictionaries The article is a theoretical review, which raises important aspects concerning Finnic lexicography. From the 19th century to the present, experience in compiling and publishing dictionaries representing the linguistic wealth of the genetically related Karelian, Vepsian, and Finnish languages has been accumulated in Russia at various stages. There is a predominance of translation-based dictionaries. At the same time, translated products are refracted in a unique way in the typologies of dictionaries that exist today. Therefore, it is important to turn not only to the systematization of existing publications, which allows us to see gaps and, as a result, outline the prospects for creating new types of dictionaries, but also to their analysis from the standpoint of theory and practice of dictionary writing. The main emphasis is placed on the well-known work on the theory of lexicography by Lev Shcherba. Special attention is paid to the contrast between academic dictionaries and educational lexicography.
