Abstract
<jats:p>The aim of the paper is to identify the features of the cognitive-intentional planning mechanism at the preverbal stage of speech activity in the context of realizing in the speaker’s communicative goal. The article reveals and theoretically substantiates the concepts of the goal of speech activity and cognitive-intentional planning; it also reveals the nature of their interrelation with the components of the preverbal stage. A stage-based model of cognitive-intentional planning is proposed reflecting the sequential implementation of psychological and cognitive components of goal-setting and ensuring the transition from the motivational-need sphere to speech realization. The functions of cognitive-intentional planning in the formation of communicative meaningfulness and pragmatic effectiveness of speech action are identified. The mechanism of cognitive-intentional planning is considered as an internal regulatory system ensuring the logical and pragmatic integrity of speech action, coordination of the motivational sphere and strategic decisions of the speech subject. The methodological basis of the study comprises cognitive and pragmalinguistic approaches implemented through the methods of discourse and cognitive analyses. The material is drawn from 143 English-language literary texts of the XX-XXI centuries. The results of the work confirm that the mechanism of cognitive-intentional planning performs the functions of an integrator and coordinator of all components of the preverbal stage, minimizing the risk of communication failures and ensuring the effectiveness of speech interaction. Goal setting appears as a complex multi-level process that determines successful communication even before its verbalization. The findings are significant for psycholinguistics, speech activity theory, language teaching methods and research in the field of artificial intelligence.</jats:p>
