Abstract

The aim of this work is to provide a theoretical and analytical review of the literature concerning the problems of the word-formation field in Russian linguistic studies. The scientific novelty of the research is determined by the fact that it is the first to synthesize information on the word-formation field contained in the publications of Russian linguists from 1969 to 2025. The work identifies key research directions and determines both similarities and differences in scholars’ views on the theory of the word-formation field. The study establishes that in Russian linguistics, the word-formation field is viewed from three primary perspectives: 1) as a group of word-formation means sharing a common word-formation meaning; 2) as a complex unit integrating derivative words, word-formation types, and word-formation and semantic word-formation categories within a “typical” approach to word formation; 3) as an integral part of a concept’s nominative field, represented by a word-formation family or a set of word-formation families within a “family-based” approach. The results of the study can be applied to the further development of word-formation field theory within the onomasiological and cognitive-discursive frameworks of Russian word-formation research.
