Abstract
<jats:p>The aim of this review is to synthesize theoretical scholarly knowledge regarding sports terminology as a system and sports discourse as the sphere of its implementation. The article examines research that demonstrates the primary trends and directions in the study of communication within the sporting sphere and its linguistic content. The scientific novelty of this review is determined by the presentation and systematization of scholarly reflections on various aspects of sports terminology and sports discourse within Russian linguistics, providing a comprehensive and detailed description of the specifics of sports communication. The results of the review illustrate the current state of research and indicate that the language of sports and sports discourse remain a constant focus of scholarly attention, with works reflecting the multi-faceted and complex nature of the object of study. The diversity of content, dynamism, event-driven nature, and several other extralinguistic factors underscore the importance and prospects for further multi-dimensional study of sports communication and the analysis of sports discourse. The synthesis of theoretical principles and the implementation of applied research aspects are aimed at improving the quality of translation, lexicographical work, and the effectiveness of verbal interaction within the sphere of sports.</jats:p>
