Abstract
<jats:p>The article provides an overview of the life and work of the St. Petersburg composer and conductor Dmitry Valentinovich Smirnov. The research aims to present Smirnov (b. December 7, 1952) as a multi-faceted figure: a composer, conductor, and educator. The study examines the key milestones of his professional development, offers a chronological biography, identifies the stylistic hallmarks of his creative signature through the lens of his choral music, and establishes a periodization of his choral output. Based on interviews with leading St. Petersburg choral conductors, the article analyzes the impact of the composer’s works on performers and the experience of collaborative work; it further highlights the significance of his compositions within both concert and pedagogical repertoires. The scientific novelty lies in the creation of a concise biographical and creative sketch of Dmitry Smirnov based on the composer’s own recollections, records from the Unified Departmental Archive, and interviews with colleagues and students. The research establishes a periodization of the composer’s life, defines stages of his professional development, and provides a brief analysis of selected instrumental and vocal works. Furthermore, the distinctive features of his choral style, which forms the core of his legacy, are identified. Through interviews with prominent choirmasters and data from concert programs, the study describes Smirnov’s professional relationships with performers and affirms the significance of his works in the contemporary repertoire of professional and amateur academic choirs in Russia.</jats:p>
