Abstract

The reviewed publication is devoted to the study of the formation and evolution of the dictatorial regime of António de Oliveira Salazar in Portugal. The work examines the most important aspects of the functioning of the dictatorship, the mechanisms of power and mobilization of the population, and shows the specific differences between the dictatorships of Nazi Germany and Fascist Italy. The authors paid special attention to the study of the interaction between the dictatorship and the traditional institutions of the Portuguese state and society, such as the army and the Catholic Church. The book convincingly answers the question of the longevity of Salazar’s dictatorship and its collapse during the Carnation Revolution in 1974. The publication will be of interest to readers who study the recent history of 20th-century Europe.
