Abstract

This paper clarifies the conceptual foundations of digital transformation and digital maturity of organizations. In academic literature, the terms digitization, digitalization, digital transformation, and digital maturity are often conflated, although they describe different levels of digital change. Based on a comparative analysis of existing approaches, we propose to distinguish these categories by the object of change, the scale of impact, and the nature of the outcome. Digital transformation is defined as a comprehensive change of an organization driven by digital solutions, affecting the business model, managerial mechanisms, and value-creation processes. Dig-ital maturity is interpreted as an organization’s capability to reproducibly obtain effects from digital initiatives and embed them into its management and development system. Such a distinction is necessary for a correct economic interpretation of digital change. The practical significance of the study lies in the possibility of using the proposed conceptual scheme when developing digital maturity assessment models and managing digital transformation.
