<jats:p>This article examines the criminal law characteristics of unlawful detention, placement in custody, or detention. It demonstrates that an investigator or inquiry officer may be subject to the crime of knowingly unlawful detention if they intentionally mislead detention facility staff, resulting in the continued unlawful application of coercive measures against an individual who should be released.</jats:p>
