Abstract

Background. The article belongs to the current modern field of visual semiotics. Within the framework of this approach, an interdisciplinary view of cultural monuments is proclaimed: they are viewed as a reflection of mental and anthropological practices. This study analyzes the construction of the icon “Saviour in Powers” from the collection of the Central Museum of Ancient Russian Culture and Art named after Andrey Rublev. The article considers the theological and symbolic approach laid down by the creator of the icon in the composition of the work. Purpose. The author aims to provide a geometric analysis of the icon’s composition. This analysis suggests that under the “layer” of the figurative beauty of the image lies another level of knowledge of the world. We are talking about a strict, verified, mathematical composition, laid down in the basis of the work, which can reflect the dogmatic teaching of Christianity. Method. The research is based on the method of formal analysis of a work of art aimed at analyzing and describing the art form, as well as the principle of historical and philosophical reconstruction. Results. As a result of the analysis, a conclusion is drawn about the possible application of mathematical (geometric) principles of construction by the creators. At the same time, the hypothesis is put forward that geometric constructions and the search for solutions to the three great problems of antiquity are not an end in themselves, but may carry symbolic and theological meanings. It is suggested that mathematics (geometry) could become a proof and expression of Christian dogmas for the Christian worldview and theology. Practical implications. The results of the research can be applied in the field of cultural, historical and art criticism issues.
