Abstract
Abstract
Bunbury Baptist College is in the South West of Western Australia. Established in 2019, the school continues to achieve rapid growth and serves a community in which there is a high degree of trauma, and a significant proportion of students have diverse learning needs. The focus of the project discussed in this chapter was to design a Christ-centred social and emotional learning programme. As a relatively new school, many overarching whole school programmes and processes were still in need of development and refinement. The team, comprising the primary school principal and staff from across the College, chose to focus on developing a common language approach to their whole-school social and emotional learning programme. Aligning the programme with the vision and values of the school was an important consideration given the unique context in which the school is situated. While considerable progress has been made, some of the key learnings taken from the project include the need to consider school readiness (given the infancy of the developing school culture and traditions), the importance of developing the programme at the school level rather than using a pre-existing programme from elsewhere and appreciating that timelines may need to be re-considered.
