Abstract
Abstract
This book presents new translations of literary epigrams from the Greek Anthology, or Palatine Anthology, compiled in Byzantium by Constantine Cephalas. It selects from the erotic, dedicatory (anathematic), funerary (epitaphs), epideictic (declamatory or rhetorical), advisory, homoerotic ('Strato's Boyish Muse'), polymetric, and miscellaneous epigrams, and from the book of puzzles and riddles. The translations come with short essays that present the classicist author's perspective on ancient Greek and Roman cultures, with an emphasis on ancient daily life. The essays also explain aspects of the reception of, and the history of scholarship on, Greece and Rome. The book closes with epigrams by Meleager of Gadara that fulfilled closural (sphragis) roles in his Garland, the first of the Anthology's prototypes.
