Abstract

Abstract
This book does not seek to suggest an “ultimate solution” to global environmental problems or even imply that there is only one way of protecting the environment. The book’s task is to present the resources within the Yorùbá Òrìṣà worship sacred orature, ritual practices, and performances that promote environmental sustainability. It is hoped that these measures may be adopted by other religions and societies looking to contribute to the pursuit of environmental preservation. Therefore, this book explores the intersection of Yorùbá Òrìṣà worship and the environment. The author is not aware of any book that interrogates the relationship between Yorùbá sacred orature and environmental sustainability. Most of the existing works have either focused on the collection of Yorùbá sacred orature, mentioned environmental sustainability in Yorùbá orature in passing, or discussed environmental issues in visual culture. This book is therefore novel in its approach to examining how the environment is presented in the Yorùbá literature, worldview, philosophy, religion, and measures taken to preserve and keep it antifragile. Antifragility is a system’s capability to not only be resilient or be able to withstand volatility, but also benefit from that which stresses it. Before a system becomes antifragile, it must have undergone attacks that would make it resilient. The ability of such a system to evolve beyond resilience is antifragility, which is the theme that occurs throughout the book. In the book, I established that there are resources within the Yorùbá indigenous knowledge systems that can be mined for environmental antifragility.
