Abstract

Abstract
In these uneasy times, we face increasing numbers of children and youth experiencing homelessness in our schools along with uncertainty about programs and policies designed to support these students. School-based practitioners are often at the forefront of upholding the right to equal education opportunity for students experiencing homelessness. A guide to developing, facilitating, and understanding the policies, programs, and perspectives on children and youth experiencing homelessness can help us navigate this uncertainty. Written for the practitioner, School-Based Practice with Children and Youth Experiencing Homelessness guides us through thoughts and perspectives on experiencing homelessness, the history of our understanding, key policy provisions, and a potential practice perspective for our school-based practice with students experiencing homelessness. Filled with case studies and practice examples, School-Based Practice with Children and Youth Experiencing Homelessness helps us to establish how we want to think and approach experiences of homelessness and how this affects our students. The book provides us with a detailed breakdown of key federal policies designed to uphold the right to equal education opportunities for students experiencing homelessness. This Second Edition is significantly rewritten and updated. It includes a new chapter on Homeless Liaisons, a key federally mandated position to help facilitate federal policy. The book includes several assessment tools for practice and covers the key barriers children and youth experiencing homelessness face when going to school. As the numbers of children and youth experiencing homelessness are expected to increase, our school-based practice will take increasing importance.
