Abstract

Abstract
Invasive species are often portrayed as one of the top threats to global biodiversity, but the common narrative of native versus alien oversimplifies a subject that is scientifically complex and politically fraught. Drawing on interviews with experts, scientific literature, historical research, case studies from around the world, and the personal stories of people working on the front lines of the so-called war on invasive species, this book explores controversies within invasion biology, trade-offs, ethical dilemmas, and the ways in which humans’ approach to unwanted plants and animals reveals our deeper anxieties about nature and belonging. At stake are not only ecosystems and economies but also our relationship with the natural world.
