Abstract
Abstract
This volume is designed to integrate research and theory on adult development with research and theory on the development of wisdom. It contains an international list of authors from many countries, including China, India, Iran, Cypress, Finland, and Portugal, and the United States. Ideas about the importance of reflection on one’s experience and thought, flexibility and openness in cognition, the ability to take the perspective of another, and the ability to consider unintended consequences are reviewed in work on adult development while issues of emotional maturity and complexity, the experiences of empathy and compassion, and how one tolerates ambiguity are reviewed in the material on wisdom. We conclude that these two bodies of work complement each other and, taken together, can create a more comprehensive view of how people mature over the years of adulthood and how this development is related to moral behavior, social behavior, exploration, and experimentation.
