Abstract

Abstract
This chapter discusses an army report on the My Lai massacre, a Nixon speech announcing more troop withdrawals from Vietnam, U.S. diplomatic opposition to U.S. policy in Pakistan and to failure to denounce the Pakistani dictatorship’s genocide in East Pakistan, public debate over William Calley and My Lai, the Laos invasion, and the Nixon administration’s opening to China. It also discusses an ill-advised statement by U.S. commander in Vietnam Creighton Abrams that another South Vietnamese move into Laos “could not be ruled out,” and a proposal by the Beat poet Allen Ginsberg for a meeting with Kissinger, Richard Helms, left-wing activists, and others, perhaps “naked on television.” Plus it discusses SALT announcements and how to inform Secretary of State Rogers and head SALT negotiator Gerard Smith of negotiations conducted behind their backs. It also discusses Soviet Jews, Lyndon Johnson’s request for declassification of documents for his memoir, and Paris peace talks.
