Abstract

Abstract
This chapter outlines the author’s purpose in writing an interpretative history of American law that synthesizes four centuries of major legal developments, landmark cases, and unresolved issues. Aimed primarily at incoming law students, it seeks to bridge the gap between historical knowledge and legal understanding, offering context often missing from jurisprudential texts. The chapter also addresses lawyers and engaged citizens who lack formal training in legal history but seek a concise, accessible overview. Emphasizing a narrative format, it explains how historical comparison over time reveals how American law evolved from its colonial foundations to its current form. Finally, the chapter defends the chosen narrative—rooted in the ideals of equality and rights in the Declaration of Independence—and encourages others to craft alternative perspectives grounded in their own values and interpretations.
