Abstract
Abstract
The chapter examines the application of the concept of human security to displacement. While migration has been a key concern in relation to human security, I argue that displacement needs to be treated as a distinct phenomenon, not a subtype of migration, or something that can be fully grasped within the conceptual field of migration studies. Rather, we require a distinct field of displacement studies in which we can apply the concept of human security. That concept and its different forms—economic, food, health, safety, and political—all can help us to understand the different impacts displacement has on people’s lives and can help us formulate policy responses to remedy those impacts and to prevent them.
