Abstract
Abstract
This chapter examines how artificial intelligence (AI) is transforming professional coaching in organizations. The chapter introduces a continuum framework spanning AI-augmented coaching (AI supports human coaches), AI-blended coaching (AI and human coaches work together), and AI-based coaching (AI delivers coaching independently). It analyzes how AI applies to foundational coaching processes including goal setting, feedback and accountability, reflection and self-awareness, and psychosocial support. The chapter explores organizational applications of AI coaching for scaling development, improving coach–client matching, and integrating with human resource management systems. Critical challenges are addressed including data privacy, quality assurance, ethical considerations, and the distinction between coaching and therapy. Future trends examine autonomous agents, multimodal AI systems, and immersive technologies. The chapter concludes that while AI coaching democratizes access to development resources, human coaches retain unique value for accountability and psychosocial support, suggesting hybrid approaches combining AI efficiency with human connection will prove most effective.
