Abstract
Abstract
Archaeology of the Post-Medieval period is a growing field within Icelandic archaeology. A handful of projects involving large-scale excavations at the start of the twenty-first century spearheaded this growth, followed by several research projects, and doctoral and postdoctoral work. As Icelandic legislation has recognized and defined the archaeology of the Post-Medieval period as an important heritage resource, both development-led archaeology and government-funded research efforts have created large datasets from this period, which provide fertile ground for research into different aspects of post-medieval society, for example, trade, resource management, industrialization, class, and living conditions. It is important to identify both where there are solid foundations for future work and where there may be gaps. Past and present research will be discussed through major interpretive themes and to conclude, avenues for future research will be suggested.
