Abstract

Abstract
This book is a history of ancient Macedonia under the Argead dynasty, from the mid-seventh century to the late fourth century, and its remarkable rise from a small tribal area at that time to a fourth-century imperial power under Philip II and especially Alexander the Great and then its dramatic collapse following Alexander’s death. It also consider Macedonia’s history under the Antigonid dynasty in the Hellenistic period (323–30) rather than simply dividing it into three, as is often the case: before Philip and Alexander; Philip and Alexander; from Alexander to Rome. The thesis of this book is that Macedonia’s earlier history was not a continuum of decline as sometimes thought but rather a more subtle rise and fall in both the Argead and Antigonid dynasties until the Roman conquest in the first century. The result is a re-examination of one of the most important kingdoms of the ancient world to show that there is much more to Macedonia than just Philip II and Alexander the Great.
