Abstract

Abstract
In this chapter, the authors use narrative collaboration to explore the musical life and lived experiences of Lady Dane Figueroa Edidi, a multifaceted Black trans woman artist. Highlighting both in- and out-of-school musical influences, the authors examine how music became a transformative space for Lady Dane to embrace her gender identity amid societal challenges. Through an intersectional lens, Dane’s narrative addresses systemic issues like racism and transphobia, which shape the experiences of trans people—particularly trans women of color—in music education and beyond. The authors advocate for inclusive, affirming spaces in music education where gender-expansive individuals can thrive and contribute to transformative cultural dialogues.
