Abstract

Abstract
In addition to a new and improved martyrdom account, Euphemia’s prestige was elevated by two extraordinary miracles that were believed to have taken place in her martyrion. In the first, which is said to have occurred regularly and publicly, Euphemia’s uncorrupted body exuded living blood that was distributed as a blessing to the faithful. The second supposedly transpired at the conclusion of the Fourth Ecumenical Council, when Euphemia expressed her approval of the Chalcedonian Definition of Faith. This chapter investigates both miracles in the context of the intensification of Chalcedonian propaganda against Miaphysites in the centuries after the council. It is argued that through interpretation the two miracles developed into sophisticated and complex theological constructions, as evidenced in early liturgical texts associated with Euphemia’s feast day. Finally, the chapter outlines the reasons and circumstances of the relics’ translation from Chalcedon to Constantinople.
