Abstract
Abstract
This chapter provides a survey of the basic facts concerning the pronunciation of the linguistic sounds of Italian, including standard and regional variants. The presentation starts with lexical phonetic considerations, describing segments from an articulatory and acoustic point of view, and then turns to the description of vowel and consonant clusters, discussing coarticulation and the formation of diphthongs, hiatuses, and syllables. From the description of the main phonosyntactic phenomena, the discussion then moves on to suprasegmental relations, discussing the rules governing stress patterns and presenting some data about the rhythmic and intonational properties of Italian, including patterns of question intonation.
