Abstract

As the world grapples with rising energy demand and environmental challenges, the push for renewable resources has become more urgent. Biobutanol stands out as a promising second-generation biofuel that can be blended with gasoline in a ratio of up to 95%, thus offering a direct and efficient alternative to traditional petrochemical fuels. This chapter explores the many benefits of biobutanol, including its role in reducing the reliance on fossil fuels and cutting down on dangerous pollutants like dust and carbon monoxide, which helps to improve air quality indexes and public health. We delve into the entire process of biobutanol production, from sourcing raw materials to the complexities of fermentation and purification. The chapter discusses the latest technologies and the hurdles we face, such as managing microbial toxicity and finding effective new strains. Beyond its use as a fuel, biobutanol has potential applications in various industries, including in synthesis and as a solvent. Looking ahead, we highlight how large-scale biobutanol production could transform our energy landscape, drive economic growth, and provide a more sustainable future. Highlighting the significance of waste-to-wealth approaches, this chapter underscores biobutanol's growing recognition as a key player in the quest for cleaner, more efficient biofuels for both gasoline and diesel engines.
