Abstract

Abstract
Researchers in language assessment are frequently interested in determining the relations between two or more variables. One of the most fundamental statistics for indicating the strength of relations between two variables is the correlation coefficient, r . The correlation coefficient is also one of the foundations for many other analytic procedures in applied linguistics and the behavioral sciences. It estimates the linear association between two variables, and provides a numerical value between ‐1.0 and +1.0 to represent that relationship. A correlation of near zero implies no relationship whereas values near +1.0 or ‐1.0 imply strong positive and negative relationships, respectively.
