Abstract

<jats:title>Abstract</jats:title> <jats:p> David Brazil (1925–1995) was the originator of <jats:italic>discourse intonation—</jats:italic> a distinctive approach to research into spontaneous speech and the teaching of pronunciation and intonation (see <jats:ext-link xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink" xlink:href="http://www.speechinaction.com/Brazil.htm">http://www.speechinaction.com/Brazil.htm</jats:ext-link> ). This approach has influenced research, teacher training, and classroom practice around the world. Publications influenced by his work started appearing in the 1980s, and continue to appear—they include Bradford (1988), Hewings and Goldstein (1993), Cauldwell (2002), and Gorsuch, Meyers, Pickering, and Griffee (2010). </jats:p>
