Abstract
Prescribing governance and systems vary from country to country; this chapter focuses on the data and mechanisms in the United Kingdom (UK). In primary care in the UK, when a product or medicine is issued on prescription and funded by the National Health Service, it is done using a specific form referred to by a code. The chapter focuses on Advisory Committee on Borderline Substances, ACBS criteria/classification. In the UK, the Department of Health maintains the British National Formulary (BNF) for medications and borderline substances. The BNF identifies three types of products: Pharmacy medicines, Prescription‐only medication (POM) and Borderline substances. There are two frameworks that can be used by advanced practitioners to prescribe POMs for their patients: supplementary and independent prescribing. Formularies are locally designed recommendations for prescribing practice to ensure safe, effective and cost‐effective prescriptions.
