Abstract
This chapter provides an introduction to behaviour change science and outlines principles to enable dietetic practitioners to deliver person‐centred care. It includes a framework of how behaviour change approaches can be integrated into a consultation whilst recognising that a flexible and collaborative approach is important. A health behaviour model is based on theoretical principles and is a way of conceptualising and describing factors affecting a behaviour, sometimes in visual or diagrammatic form. There are many models and theories of behaviour change with varying levels of evidence for their effectiveness. They are behaviour change techniques, and Egan's problem management framework. A person‐centred approach forms the basis of the helping relationship and is fundamental to healthcare. Empowerment is a process through which people gain greater control over decisions and actions affecting their health. Self‐monitoring or diary keeping supports behaviour change.
